A newly installed golden statue near King’s Wharf in San Fernando has sparked outrage among the Warao First Peoples community, who argue that it inaccurately represents their heritage. Positioned along Lady Hailes Avenue as part of the city’s redevelopment project, the statue was intended as a tribute to the indigenous community. However, its unveiling, which lacked official designation or signage, has drawn criticism from Warao Shaman Raould Simon. Simon described the statue as a "desecration," highlighting inaccuracies in its depiction of traditional Warao attire and headdress. He further criticized the lack of consultation with the indigenous community and called for the structure to be either altered or removed. The controversy has ignited discussions on the importance of cultural accuracy and proper engagement with indigenous groups in public commemorations.
