Mali, known as the "world's saddest elephant," has died in captivity at the Manila Zoo, according to an announcement by the city's mayor, Honey Lacuna. The news comes after years of controversy and calls from animal welfare groups, including PETA and prominent figures like Paul McCartney, urging authorities to relocate Mali to an elephant sanctuary. Mali, whose full name was Vishwamali, was the only captive elephant in the Philippines and had lived alone in a pen at the Manila Zoo for decades. Her solitary existence drew attention from animal activists who raised concerns about her well-being and advocated for her transfer to a more suitable environment. In 2013, Paul McCartney, collaborating with PETA, appealed to Philippine President Benigno Aquino III to end Mali's suffering by moving her to an elephant sanctuary. Other advocates for Mali's freedom included Pamela Anderson and Dr. Jane Goodall. Despite efforts from the "Free Mali" movement and an elephant sanctuary prepared to receive her, Mali remained in captivity at Manila Zoo, where she was considered an integral part of the facility. Mali's recent death was attributed to health complications, including cancer and an aorta blockage. In the days leading up to her passing, Mali was observed lying on her side and breathing heavily, signaling distress. Dr. Heinrich Patrick Peña-Domingo, the chief veterinarian at Manila Zoo, noted that Mali exhibited signs of pain by rubbing her trunk against a wall. While animal activists mourn Mali's death and criticize the conditions she endured, some, including Mayor Lacuna, defend her captivity, stating that she was a part of their lives and the face that greeted visitors to Manila Zoo.
