Following the tragic death of the physical education (PE) teacher, Joel Garcia, at Mary's College in Port of Spain, the Ministry of Education's employee assistance programme (EAP) and the Student Support Services Division (SSSD) extended their support to the staff and students. Minister of Education Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly expressed the ministry's condolences to the teacher's family and mentioned that the EAP and SSSD were offering assistance. PE teacher Joel Garcia, aged 55, was discovered unresponsive in the school's PE room after complaining of chest pains. Despite being rushed to the Port of Spain General Hospital, he was pronounced dead. Adesh Dwarika, the first vice-president of the TT Unified Teachers' Association (TTUTA), praised the ministry for promptly sending support personnel to the school. EAP counselors provided guidance to the staff on coping with their loss, while SSSD personnel offered counseling to the students who were taught by Mr. Garcia. Dwarika noted the profound sadness that permeated the entire school, describing Mr. Garcia as a beloved staff member known for his calm yet firm demeanor. The school planned to hold a special prayer and mass in his memory on Wednesday morning.
