A voice recording has been circulating, warning about a poisonous caterpillar from Venezuela that has caused several children to seek medical attention after contact. The caterpillar in question has been identified as the White Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillar, which is cute and fuzzy but poisonous to touch. Its hairs are barbed and break off in the skin, causing a serious red rash and itching. Caterpillars can be poisonous as a result of the plants they eat, which provides chemical protection against predators. The venomous White Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillar feeds on woody trees and shrubs, especially Hickory Trees and nut producers. In North Carolina, there are eight venomous caterpillars, including the White Hickory Tussock, which are harmful to touch. If you get a rash from the Hickory Tussock, ice can reduce pain, and washing the site with a solution of household ammonia or bicarbonate of soda can relieve itching.
